Thanscultural Psychiatric was first interested by Kraepelin in 1904 when he had observed the regional differences in the behavior of the mentally ill in Germany and in other European countries. J. Ruesch and E.D. Wittkower regard Cultural Psychiatry a brabch of Social Psychiatry. Tt concerns itself with the cultural aspects of etiology frequency and nature of mental illness and the care and aftercare of the mentally ill within the confinement of a given cultural unitt. Transcultural psychiatry extends scienfific observation beyond the scope of one cultural unit on to another. The first Transcultural psychiatric section in North American was set up by Professor E.D. Wittkower and Professor J. Fried in 1956. This section was designed to serve three purposes : 1 as an information center 2. As a research center and 3. As a teaching center. The author reviews psychiatric literatures which are available in such center. The literatures of eigth south-east Asian countries are discussed. They are Thailand Republic of China, Japan, South Vietnam, Republic of Philippines, India, Malasia and Singalpore. The people in each country have different characters and attitudes due to culture influences. The cultural aspects of etiology, frequency and nature of mental illness,and the care and aftercare of the mentally ill are discussed.
