Objective : To examine the characteristics of suicides in Thailand between 1998 and 2002. Method: Data from the Bureau of Policy and Strategy, Ministry of Public Health, was obtained to analyze mortality suicide. Data examined were rates, age groups genders, and methods of suicides during 1998-2002. Results: The average suicide rate during 1998-2002 was 8.1 per 100,000 with the male to female ratio of 3.4:1. Male suicides were peak during the ages of 25-29 years (23.2 per 100,000) , while female suicide showed less variation with age. Hanging was the most common method used, and this was followed by using agricultural toxic substances. In addition, suicide was most prevalent in the upper northern region. Provinces with high suicide rates included Chiang Mai, Lampoon, Phayao, Chiangrai, and Nakorn Pathom, respectively. HIV infections may be related to the high prevalence of suicide in the North Conclusions: Suicide prevention programs should focus on males in the early adulthood period. Particular attention should also be given to provinces with highest suicide rates, such as Chiang Mai and Lampoon Provinces.
