Objective: Childhood obesity whose prevalence is globally rising is usually difficult to treat The researchers therefore developed and examined the efficacy of the family-based group therapy which included group education and behavioral therapy to change the lifestyles associated with obesity with cooperation from the family and by a multidisciplinary team Methods: Obese children aged 10 to 15 years old were assessed for depression and self esteem using the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI) and Five-Scale Test of Self-esteem for Children (FSC) respectively Their body weight and body mass index (BMI) were measured before and after a 5-day group therapy and at a 3-month follow-up The group therapy included dissemination of education and practice of diet control exercise and other daily activities that were associated with obesity during which three sessions of behavioral therapy were organized to motivate them to change their lifestyles Results: The subjects of the study consisted of 26 obese children (17 boys and nine girls) aged 12.+-2.0 years with the mean BMI of 33.3+-3.7 kg/m2 Six patients (2639%) had depression as defined by the CDI scores higher than 15. Furthermore the FSC scores on global family social academic and body aspects were 12.4+-2.1 14.3+-2.8 +- 1.8 10.7+- 2.4 and 8.0+- 1.9 respectively The FSC family factor score was significantly highest and the FSC body score was significantly lowest In addition the 24 subjects who completed the 5-day group therapy lost their body weight by 0.8+- 0.9 kg(86.3+-14.6 vs. 85.5+-14.8,p‹ 0.01)Furthermore the 18 patients who came to the 3-month follow-up lost their body weight by 1.5+-3.3 kg(82.8+-13.9 vs. 81.3+- 14.2,p=0.07) and BMI by 1.0+-1.1 kg/m2 (32.7+-3.5 vs. 31.7+- 3.8,p=0.001) It was also found that the BMI losses of boys and girls were not significantly different (0.9+- 1.2 vs. 1.2 +- 1.0,p= 0.53) and that the BMI reduction was not correlated with the CDI scores and FSC scores except that it was marginally correlated with the global FSC score (r=0.44,p=0.07) Conclusions: The findings of the present study revealed that there was a high prevalence of depression in obese children Also a family-based behavioral group therapy was effective in the short-term follow-up for childhood obesity Finally it was found that BMI changes were not significantly associated with sex depression and self-esteem
