A retrospective study of attempted suicide in schizophrenic inpatients was conducted at Siriraj Hospital during 1992-1996. From a total of 154 schizophrenic patients studied, the number of suicide attempters were 49 patients (31.8%). Only one suicide attempter successfully committed suicide (0.6%). The suicide attempted schizophrenics were significantly different from the non-suicide attempted groups in duration of illness (> 5 years) but were not significantly different in other factors. We compared between 28 schizophrenic patients (18.27%) who had attempted suicide and/or wanted to die with schizophrenic patients who admitted for other reasons. We found working schizophrenic patients had a significantly higher risk of attempted suicide but other factors were not significant. Depression, psychomotor retardation, Schneiderian’s symptoms, suicidal idea, guilt, helplessness, hopelessness and auditory hallucination were significant psychiatric symptoms of the attempted group. So psychiatric symptoms on admission are very important for evaluating the risk of suicide in schizophrenic inpatients.
