รายละเอียด / Details:

This qualitative research aimed at studying lifestyles of women living in the sociocultural context of a suburban area in Bangkok, which influenced their ideas, beliefs and behavior concerning alcohol drinking. Data collection had been carried out from July 2005 to April 2006 in two steps. The first step of data screening aimed to select reproductive-age women who consumed alcoholic beverages. The second step involved in-depth interviewed and participatory and non-participatory observation. The research findings suggested that all of the women realized that alcohol drinking might lead to health problems, accidents, smoking gambling and finally debt. It was found that the social context in which they existed had a direct effect on their alcohol drinking behavior. The actual causes of alcohol drinking among them were conflicts with 'their husband' or 'Mother-in-law' and they opted for alcohol to relieve suffering due to failure in their marital life. With regard to the cultural context, which was a consumerist culture, it indirectly influenced their alcohol drinking behavior. Therefore, solving the problem of alcohol drinking among reproductive-age women required cooperation of other family members, especially husbands.
