1. In a series of 35 patients underwent stereotaxic amygdalotomy 15 had unilateral surgery on the dominant hemisphere 10 underwent unilateral operation upon the non-dominant side, and 10 had bilateral procedures. In all cases pre-and postoperative psychological tests, in cluding WISC, WAIS , Bender Visual-Motor Gestalt Test, and Rorschach Test, were performed. 2. The result on the intellectual status showed thaat before operation the unilaterally operated groups had a borderline deficiency where as the bilaterally operated gropu possessed a moron level of intelligence. After surgery there was slight improvement but not to a significant level. The higher scores might be due to practice effect and improvement in behavior in terms of having self confidence and better attention. 3. The unilaterally dominant operated group showed improvement to a significant level P>.05 in digit symbol and picture arrangement subtests. This indicated better functioning in the task that required visual memory, motor speed, capacity for new learning and problem solving by anticipation. This improvement was most likely due to the effect of surgery. 4. The Bender Visuak Motor Gestalt Test and the Rorschach Test showed 80% improvement in performance after operation. The authors wish to express their sincere appreciation to valuable services of Miss Ladda Ayawongse, Miss Rochana Thephasdin na Ayudhya, and the team of psychologists of the Department of psychotogy of Somdet Chaopraya Hospital and of the Mental Hygiens Clinic.
