The Benzodiazepines are among the most widely prescribed drug in the world for patients with both psychic and somatic anxiety. Their anxiolytic effect and dependence potential leading to their abuse should be award. The out-patient prescription study has been carried out at Pranungklao Hospital, Nontaburi in September 1996. There were 15,066 prescriptions with 1,001 cases 6.64% benzodiazepines prescribed. These drugs are prescribed more frequently to women than at a ratio of 2.05: 1. The patients were gerenerally 30 years and over at the average age of 46.67 years. The majorty of prescriptions came from medical clinic 55.64%, followed by psychiatric and other special clinics. When the number of prescriptions per clinic is analysed, the psychiatrist rank first at 52.15%. Diazepam is the most common prescribed drugs 44.96% followed by Alprazolam, Clorazepate, Lorazepam and others consecutively. Short duration,low dose benzodiazepines at bed time are more often prescribed except the well followed chronic psychiatric cases would receive relatively high dose and longer duration. This study found no evidence of benzodiazepines abuse from the benzodiazepines prescription at Pranungklao Hospital.
