รายละเอียด / Details:

Group Psychotherapy has veen introduced by senior psychiatrists as a method of treatment for psychiatric patients at Srithunya Hospital since 1963. Reported results in 1964, 1965, and 1966 indicated that it was applicable to psychotic Thai patients with applicable to psychotic Thai patients with emphasis on the therapist's patience. A study on group psychotherapy with an open small group was carried out in the Female Services of Srithunya Hospital in 1968-1969 to confirm the previous reports. The technique employed was a psychoanalytically oriented dynamic approach. 140 sessions, each lasting one hour, were held twice a week for 60 psychiatric patients almost all of whom were schizophrenic. The authors noted three principles. Firstly, the therapist must relax, accept the patients and remain alert to the dynamic of each patients. At the beginning patients wanted to speak only with the therapist who preferred them to speak to each other, so the therapist tended to feel anxious throughout the psychotherapeutic sessions. It is important that the therapist recognizes his own emotional experience, Secondly, interaction was minimal at first due to ignorance among members of the groups, but after 80-100 therapeutic sessions, patients were more expressive to each other. Thirdly, transference would not deveolop unitl group interaction was established. Hpwever the attitude and the patience of the group leader may modify the original culturally inexpressive behavior of the patients, which is the key for group psychotherapy in Thailand.
