Objective To review the relationship between epilepsy and schizophrenia-like psychosis, classifications and clinical presentation of psychotic symptoms. Methadology The present study is a review of selected articles and textbooks. Result The findings of the study revealed that were different mechanisms which could explain the relationship between epilepsy and schizophrenia-like psychosis, most of which emphasized the abnormality of the brain structure such as cortical dysgenesis or diffuse brain lesion. Furthermore, and antagonist relationship was found between these two disorders. Besides this, types and symptoms of psychosis that occurred with epileptic patients could be divided into preictal, ictal interictal, chronic interical and postictal. The symptoms, which included hallucination, delusion, and mood swings, were rather similar, so other characteristics needed to be taken into consideration such as level of consciousness, duration of time, and changes in the electrical wave in the brain duaring psychosis. It was also discovered that chronic interictal was difficult to differentiate from psychosis. Conclusion This review enables physicians to understand the relationship between epilepsy and schizophrenia-like psychosis and the psychotic symptoms that occur with the epileptic patients at different stages so that correct diagnosis and treatment can be made. However, this article had a limitation interms of literature review; therefore, systematic studies such as a meta-analysis should be carried out to obtain data generated by studies utilizing the same research methodology. Clear-cut categorization should also be made, and effective treatment currently in use should also be further investigated.
