The objective of this study was to evaluate the results of drug counseling in outpatient amphetamine dependence treatment, focusing on medication compliance. The sample of 114 amphetamine dependent outpatients which had their first clinic visit during March and April 2001 at Thanyarak Hospitalwas randomly allocated into 2 groups; the experiment and the control. The treatment process was completed in 21 days with 4 hospital visit for a 14 day medication attendance and the last hospital visit for treatment evaluation. The intervention was drug counseling by pharmacist at each time of medication prescription. It was found that the mean level of compliance with respect to all medications administration and the full term treatmetn of the experimental group were significantly higher than that of the control group. However, there was no significant differences in number of medication attendance between the groups. The drug related problems found in patients receiving drug counseling were incorrect medication administration, adverse drug reactions and medications which might interfere with their works. All the drug related problems were prevented or resolved by drug counseling.
