A Selected group of 42 patients with mild depressive illness treated and followed-up at Siriraj Hospital and the private clinic between the year 1964-1974 is studied. The following findings are some characteristics of the illness, 1. The female and male patients are equal in number, 2. The common age group is 30-39 , and the onset of 74% of the patients is before the age 50, 3. The average age of the patients is 40.9, 4. The ration of the married and the married and the single is 2.6:1, 5. Almost of them are in the middle or upper classes, 6. About one-fifth has more attack, 7. About one-fifth of their closed relatives has the same illness, two of them committed suicide, 8. The majority develops the symptoms without apparent causes, 9. The onset of the illness in over half of the cases is 1-3 months and the avarage is 3.8 months, 10. The most common chief complaints are the physical symptoms, 11. The clinical manifestation that show statistical significance and are used as the criteria for diagnosis are depressed mood, terminal insomnia fatigue, poor concentration, anorexia and weight loss, retardation, constipation anxiety, irritability, loss of interests, feeling of inadequacy and diurnal variation with worsening of the symptoms in the morning, 12. The average duration of the illness is 6.2 months, 13. Complete recovery is found in almost of the patients, and 14. No patients develop hypomanic symptoms or have suicidal attempts during the cdourse of follow-up. The characteristic of mild depressive illness in Thai people being described is similar to those in the westerners except for the difference in some symptoms which is considered to be due to the difference in cultural background rather the nature of the illness.
