There was rapidly increasing of amphetamine abuse among adolescence similar with increasing number of amphetamine abuse patients. The retrospective study was done in order to fine out the natural history of the problem. Data were collected during Oct., 1995 to Sept., 1996 at Thanyarak Hospital. The attention was focused on the patient's symptoms and the risk factors precipitating psychotic program. There were 865 cases in this study 820 cases were male and 45 cases were female patients. The average age was 20.6 +- 6.8 yrs-old. About fifty percent were unemployed.11.3 percent were students and most of them 54.2% were studying at high school level. Couriosity was the main cause of amphetamine abuse 74.8%. Physical subjective symptoms were dry mouth palpitation headache dizziness. About 5% of all patients developed psychotic symptoms, mostly were auditory hallucination and paranoid delusion 20 cases. Some patients were suffered from depression 5 cases. Comparing between psychotic and non-psychotic group. The average age of the psychotic group (24.2+-6.7 yrs-old) was older than the non-psychotic group (20.6+-6.8 yrs-old). There were no difference in occupation, duration of amphetamine abuse and the method of amphetamine usage. About half of the psychotic group had the history of amphetamine abuse for 1-2 tablets dauly. The close observation of the amphetamine abuse patients should be done. The early detection of the psychotic symptoms is necessary, especially the homicidal or suicidal tendency. Psychotherapeutic intervention such as counseling have to be done in order to prevent relapse.
