An epidemic of hysterical symptoms, confined to one single class of a large school in Bangkok, is described. There were 17 adolescent girls and 26 boys in the class, all in the 14-17 age group. Four of them or approximately 10% had the attacks and all were girls. Three were referred for psychiatric evaluation. One was diagnosed neurotic from the other mental hospital. Their case histories obtained from the parents, the teacher, their friends and themselve are given in detail. Psychological test were done in two cases. It is evident that three girls have had neurotic symptoms about 2-5 years prior to the epidemic. Socioeconomic background and parental relationship of the two girls are poor. The girl who started the epidemic has had neurotic symptoms since the age 11 and the precipitating cause for her firat attack seemed to be acute abdominal pain. Their symptoms that are considered to be hysterical neurosis are fainting and falling spells, anxiety attacks, hyperventilation symptoms, unconsciousness, confusion, disorientation, restlessness, screaming and abnormal movements the epidemic lasted about 4 months. Possible dynamics are discussed. Early seperation of the attacked girl from the rest of the group is the effective prophylaxis of epidemic.
