Clarification of the meaning of the word "depression" and a teoretical review of depression in children and adolescents are presented with the present use of the diagnostic criteria for Major Depressive disorder for any age group. A great variation of the incidence of depression in children and adolescents is found in previous studies, mainly due to lack of reliable diagnostic criteria and differences in the studied population. Finally, a suggestion was made for futyre study in order to provide the knowledge in this area for the pupose of teaching, early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
