Having anticipated that the knowledge in "family and child development" will be much needed in Thailand in the near future, the Behavioral Science Research Institure, Srinakharinwirot University, has sponsored many empirical studies on this topic. This report is part of a larger research project titled "Familial relations, mental health and morality of school adolescents" One thousand adolescents in the first and third years of secondary schools in Bangkok and Songkla Province were asked to respond to a set of questionnaires consisting of 5 indices of parent-child relationship and 2 indices of mental health status, Stepwise Multiple Regression was performed of various sections of the data which revealed many significant findings and suggested important applications. One major finding was that the attitudes towards the father was the strongest predictor of the levels of mental of many types of adolescents, namely, male adolescents,adolescents of working mothers, and the adolescents from the southern province. Furthermore, the analyses of variance of the attitude towards the father of these adolescents showed that, adolescents with more favorable attitude towards the father came from the fa,ilies where adolescents felt that high love-oriented, high reasoning- oriented child rearing practices were prevalent with less amount of conflict in moral reasoning between parents and the respondents. It was concluded that the results were consistent with previous research findings in Thailand and abroad. Important role of father was emphasized by the results of this study in the family with male adolescents, family with working mother and in traditional family.
