The paper explores certain contemporary development that have exerted, and will continue to exert, a profound impact on Child Psychiatry trainig programs. Prominent among these development are the unrelenting attacks and criticisms thaat continue to be directed agains the psychiatric profession; recruitment problems that have reached crisis proportions and in some instances have actually caused the demise of some training programs, the subtle but nonetheless powerful role that economic, political and social developments in a given community are beginning to play, in determining the nature and quality of services delivered. The paper proposes thaat in order to continue to exist, training programs must seriously re-examine and take stock of their training philosophies and priorities (which hiterto may have been implicit and taken for granted), discarding goals and practices that are no longer contributing to the programs viability and adopting those that enable them to become more responsive to the prevailing community ethos
