Now it is 45 years since ECT being introduced to treat the psychiatric patient by Cerletti and Bini in the year 1938. Though the instrument and the procedure had been rebuilt and improved by many authorities for several occasions as a number of reason during the year 1954-1977 it had been rejected to use. The declination of usage was up to the point, in some countries, there was the law prohibited to treat the psychiatric patient by ECT. This crisis activated the psychiatric association of England, U.S.A., Scandinavia, and Canada performed the studies and researches to prove the adventage of ECT. The findings were cncluded that ECT was effective economical and life saving. ECT was benefit to treat the affective disorder and some types of schizophrenia. Recently ECT had been resumed the popularity. In Thailand, ECT was firstly welcome by professoe Arun B. Suwana seven year following ceretti and Bini. It seemed to be mostly accepted only in the mental hospitals. Presently the method of treatment is still non-modified and the number of patient treated os gradually run down.
