A group of researchers from South East Asia Treaty Organization Medical Research Laboratory comprised of two Thai psychiatrists, two American psychiatrists, one public health doctor, four public health nurses and ten senior medical students has made a Survey Study of Mentally III Incidence in Mae-Sarieng, a north-western district in the province of Mae-Hongsorn. The survey study pointed to the ethnic group of Lua people, the hill tribes. They migrated from up hill to populated lower land at the Mae-Sarieng, hoping to have more facilities in livelihood and better communication to outer because of new state road from Chiengmai has just constructed. The idea of research is also to detect the impact of cultural and psychological changing in new ways of life aftermath of migration. The methodology started by sending a public health doctor monitoring the incidence of severe psychiatric illness in co-operation and suggestion by local village leads. Detection of cases has thence confirmed and excluded by researchers. Every case of suspected and controlled was examined by Anerican psychiatrists, Thai psychiatrists and also by medical students separately. They settled when all gave the same diagnosis. The conclusion found out 8 cases from 918 population or 8.8 per 1,000. Suffered from severe psychiatric illness. The 8 cases were 6 schizophrenia, 1 affcetive disorder and 1 senile dementia. Additionally 2 cases of mental retardation were found.
