The authors reviewed the In-patient Thai monks and novices who were admitted to the Northern Psychiatric Hospital Centre (at Suan Prung Hospital, Chiangmai, Thailand) during the years 1967-1971. There were 152 patients who had been admitted, most of them were schizophrenia 52.6%. About 30.92% of the patients developed psychosis and psychoneurosis after becoming monks for one year. The relationship between the affected patients and the time were reciprocal ratio. 82.89% of the patients were single, but 17.11% of them were married, about, 65.4% of the marned were divorced before being monks. Most of them came to the hospital with the chief complains of headache, insomnia and talkativity. The patients frequently smoked cigarrettes, and drank alcohol. 68.42% were graduated from primary school. Major tranquilizers were found to be most effective in treatment. The duration of hospitatization was about 4 months long. 84.18% The authors had also correlated their datas comparable with those of other reports of general psychosis and psychoneurosis from other hospitals.
