Seventy five morhers of Down syndrome children aged 3-5 years old who attended the Early Developmental Intervention Program at Tajanukul Hospital during the months of May 1990 and April 1992 were interviewed. Of the 75 mothers, 42 were young mothers (aged under 35 years) and 33 were eldery mothers (aged 35 years and over). Both groups have had four times higher histiries of having abortion than statistical reports of the general mothers. Most mothers 90.7% reported that they had never known about Down syndrome before the birth of their Down syndrome children. After having Down syndrome children, there was a statistically significant difference in behaviour toward sterilization between the young and the elderly mothers (p=0.0006).Five percent 4.8 of the young mothers compared with 39 percent 39.4 of elderly mothers were sterilized. More young mothers 47.6% were pregnant and/or had delivered more babies after having Down syndrome children while only 6.1 percent of the elderly mothers had had additional children (p=0.0002). However 77.3 percent of mothers who decided to have more children had amniocentesis diagnosis. Seventy-nine percent 78.7% of the mothers reported that they first learned of their Down syndrome newborns from their obstetricians and 62.8 percent of them brought their children for developmental intervention services upon recommendation of their physicians.
