รายละเอียด / Details:

To evaluate the clinical characteristics of depressive patients seeking treatment in Thailand and to compare with those from other cultures, eighty-seven depressive out-patients from Ramathibodi Hospital, Thailand were studied by using the WHO schedule for Standarized Assessment of Depressive Disorders. The study revealed that most patients presented with somatic symptoms at their first visits. Some pathoplastic cultural influences were found , among which were the infrequence of feelings of hopelessness and the idea of self-insufficiency; a high frequency of irritability but with lower frequency in aggression also accompanied. Fifty-nine percent of patients reported feelings of guilt. However, regarding the content, more than half of them were attributed to bad deeds in their previous lives. Such finding should not be interpreted as true guilt feelings since the concept of guilt and other associated feelings were different from those in the west. As a whole, the findings in this study were similar to those obtained from previous studies from other different cultures, which reconfirmed the presence of the common core symptoms of depression.
