Objective: This study investigated the motivation factors which lead 20 Thai women to become mistresses. Method : Twenty mistresses were identified through psychiatric evaluation process. These women were refered because of having psychiatric complaints. Demographic and psychodynamic data were collected and analyzed with the subjects' permission for research purpose. Result : These women had conscious motivation factors for becoming mistresses : needed love, affection and psychological supports from the husbands; being cheated or raped by the husbands; needed financial support from the husbands. The unaware factors were the personality makeups of these women, they were dependent, depressive, immature, histrionic, impulsive. Conclusions : Childhood psychological deprivation and disappoinment in the exhusbands resulted in searching for love, affection from the present husbands even they had to be mistresses. Personality problems caused them to be easily cheated or raped. Poverty was also a significant factor. Clinical implication is to raise families awareness and to help families to have better child rearing for better personality development, and to help families to have better love and warm family lives in order to prevent psychological deprivation. Govemment plan to fight poverty will help to lessen the problem. Educational system can help in shaping for a heal thier personality.
