The objective of this study was to find out the situation of amphetamine use, the results of rehabilitation, measurement of amphetamine in urine and means to prevent amphetamine spread among schools and universities attendants, and to propose policy recommendations for prevention and treatment of amphetamine addiction among those students. Collection and analysis of data was carried out by reviewing relevant document and questionnaires sent out to 88 drug rehabilitation centers in all regions. Results of the study showed that amphetamine addiction among schools attendants was increasing every year. Random urine tests of students throughout the country between 1995-1996 revealed that 1.16 percent of them were addicted to amphetamine. Information from questionnaires showed that as high as 40.7 percent of the students addicted to amphetamine among total attendants of 78 rehabilitation centers, out of which the ration on OPD cases for boys and girls was 20: 1. Sixty-five percent of the students were 12-14 years of age 72 percent lived with their parents and 70 percent began taking the drug just to try it out. Voluntary rehabilitation as out-patients was more than in patients. It took 2-7 days to be treated as in-patients. Results of the rehabilitation showed that a larger number turned back to the addiction. Most of the initial urine tests were conducted with the ready-made solution of the Medical Sciences Department. Successful rehabilitation of students was observed in the E. Tech project carried out in Chonburi. Policies proposed by the researchers in preventing the spread of amphetamine use were: contineously authorities concerned should continuously collect information in order to make it most up-to-date NGO should be supported to be closely and seriously involved in prevention and acontrol so that the problem solved at the initial stage; it was recommended to implement "voluntary rehabilitation" mixed with "forced rehabilitation"; support in teams of budget, skills and morale should be given to officials concerned with the rehabilitation and more researches should be encouraged more over the construction of new drug rehabilitation centre especially for students and the youth should be considered; development of testing solutions in order to cope with the change in the solutions of amphetamines; net-work of laboratories should also be set-up in various areas, beginning where there were serious problems and then expanded to other areas.
