Two patients with thyroid dysfunction, one suffering from hyperthyroidism and the other hypothyroidism, associated with psychotic symptoms are reported. In both cases the psychotic symptoms developed after the symptoms of thyroid dysfunction. The psychiatric manifestations in both were similar to schizophrenia. They were delusions of various kinds, auditory and visual hallucinations, abnormal behavior and symptoms of depression. The patient with hyperthyroidism recovered almost completely after being treated by subtotal thyroidectomy. In the other case with hypothyroidism, the treatment with thyroid extract produced complete relief of physical symptoms as well as mental symptoms. A brief survey of the literatures on mental symptoms in thyroid diseases is made.
