During the period of four years, at Chulalongkorn Hospital and Medical school, in Bangkok, 34 cases of vaginal foreign bodies were observed and assessed to study types, characteristic features and associated factors. There were 2 children and 30 adults. The ages ranged from 5 to 60 years. Most women were mrrried and aged between 25 to 35 years old. Frequently the subjects were ignorant about the presence of the objects in their vagina. The majority had variable amount of vaginal discharge. Types of the vaginal foreign bodies were rubber bands or rings of various kinds, condoms, swabs, bottle, ton, fruit, seed, rubber catheter, piece of paper, piece tobacco, piece of string and piece of wood. The many be divided into three groups of according to the method of insertion: 1. Self insertion for either masturbation or medication. 2. Insertion by either husbands or doctors and abandoning by carelessness and/or selfishness. 3. Accidental insertion or unexplained. Seventy percents of vaginal foreign bodies were adverse consequences of either manturbation in children and adults or self treatment of sexual inadequacy using rubber bands or rings of various kinds to maintain penile erection. These bands were slipped off and abandoned in the vagina after intercourse, usually without the knowledge of the women. Many males believe that these rings or bands enhance their sexual performance while the female partners reported no change in sexual satisfaction. A great variety of rings and bands have been used to maintain penile erection in the Far Eastern countries, particularly Japan, for sometimes. Rubber bands are unique and the most common vaginal foreien bodies in Thailand. Results of the study indicate that there are latent sexual problems and ignorance of sexual techiques in the general population. In addition most of Thai women have inadequate knowledge of their own reproductive anatomy and are unable to clean their vagina personally. These problems may be solved by giving a sex education progrsm to the public.
