Kratom of Mitragyns species Forth is the tree indigenous to Thailand; from the report ONCB, Kratom is the most widely consumption plant in Sourthern part. The objectives of this study are to understand the pattern of usage, psychological and physiological effects of Kratom in users. Method From March 2003 till May 2003, semi structure interview, QOL 26 and GHQ 28 asked 386 people in Huupin city whom still using kratom, Descriptive statistical method was applied. Result we found that most of the subject was male 93.1% average age was 43 year old, most of the subject worked in plant and agriculture sector. For working hard 63%, refreshment and to relief pains are among the most common reasons of using kratom. Most of subject consumpted kratom for 20 years, average consumption was 20 leaves per day. Subjects used kratom in the morning and during working time. 38% of subject had ever tried to quit because of stop working and scarceness. 36.6% and 63.4% of subject had moderate and good quality of life as measured by QOL 26. From GHQ 28, most of the subject had average physical and mental health This study shows that people use kratom for working reason not recreation as in other substance dependence group. Because of its indigenous and positive effect on physical and mental health, very few people have tried to stop consumption.
