The aim of this study was to survey knowledge and attitude toward uncomplicated epilepsy on people living in Bangkok and suburb areas, Chiangmai, Ubolrajathani provinces during February -June 2003 by unpurposived sampling, The questionnaire consisted 10 items of general knowledge on epilepsy and 30 items of attitude part. The Linker was applied from 1-7 Frequency and percentage were analyzed 2540 copies of questionnaire were distributed. There were 2,065 completed copies. 15 were incomplete but partially analysis. 18 were discarded. Therefore 81.9% were collected for analysis. The results revealed that 55.4% was female. The mean age was 29.16+-12 years. 47.3% was graduated at Bachelor degree, 36.7% were student at college and university level, 91% did not have relatives with epilepsy. 54% had information of epilepsy and most from TV program. 64% did not know first aids care for epilepsy 11% did not let their relatives play with epileptic people. 75% thought that most of epilepsy were cured 40% thought that epilepsy needs life long medication but did need regular drugs taken. 27% felt that epileptics were mentally ill patients. 12% thought that epilepsy was contagious. For attitude items, they felt that epileptics had behavior and emotion problems, general people did not understand them and avoid getting close to them at 54%, 63%, 62% and 54% respectively. In conclusion, Knowledge and attitude toward epilepsy in general people living in main cities of Thailand were deviated. Health promotion and education for general people on epilepsy are important in destigmatization and ensure them to know to care epileptic people during attacks properly.
