The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to study effects of Participatory Learning Group (PL Group) on anxiety of generalized anxiety disorder patients. All of the patients were OPD service recipients of Prasimahabhodi Psychiatric Hospital, Ubonratchatani during March and May 2001.. The twenty-five patients were divided to 10 and 15 as an experimental and controlled group, respectively. The technuque utilized was simple random sampling. The experimental was managed to attend a PL Group which was constructed by the researcher according to cognitive behavioral therapy. The participatory learning principle was technically applied in troup activity management. The experimental group participated the group6 times per 2 days for which the researcher was group leader. The controlled group received routine care. The resrarch tools were : personal information recordinng form, health situation recording form, exercises for daily stress relaxation, and state-trait anxiety inventory form X according to speiberger (1987) which were justified for reliability by means of test-retest method. The thirty generalized anxiety disorder patients as the OPD recipients of Prasrimahabhodi Hospital induced the state anxiety form to be .82 for reliability whereas the trait anxiety form to be .74. The PL Group planing as construced by the researcher was justified for content validity by seven experts. The data collection was carried on thoroughly 2 phases, before the experiment and one month after the experiment. Then the anxiety scores of the generalized anxiety disorder patients were analyzed for differences. Mann -Whitney U Test were utilized for analysis of the difference between groups. Whereas Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Singed-Ranks Test was applied for single group analysis. Contents analysis was carried out for group recording scripts. The research finfings were: the state-anxiety score of the patients decreased after joining the PL Group with statistical significance P‹.01, whereas the Trait-Anxiety score was actually not difference. It was also found that state-Anxiety and Trait-Anxiety score of the patients after received routine care was not different. Besides, post test of the state-Anxiety score between both group yield a very significant difference (p<.01), whereas no difference in Trait-Anxiety score found. Form the content analysis in group operation, it was found that the experimental group perceived learning in various aspects. They were : learning and understanding about self-sickness problem, attitude change toward the situation, and having more various appropriate problem solving method, and having more confidence about the ability to recover the anxiety symptom with less medical dependency. Moreover, the group process induced important curative factors : information imparting and altruism. This research results could be utilized as a guideline for nursing intervention to decrease anxiety of generalized anxiety disorder patients, Promote behavior of appropriate problem-solving method by decreasing anxiety medical dependency, and do future research. Nevertheless, according to the research constrains: a small ; number of the samples, a short of research monitoring,and evaluation : external variables may be affecting the result of this study. Consequently, the group planing should be developed continuously.
