Staying at the observation and protection center was a youth crisis of life because they would encounter with unfamiliar environment, freedom losee, detting limit,a nd be deparated from their families. These may lead them to possess the automatic negative thouthts leading to depression and mental health problems. The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine the depression level among youths in the observation and protection center of durat Thani province. Data was collected from 182 young inmates confined to the center during February, 2003. The questionnaires used in the study consisted of two parts: 1) Demographic Data profile, and 2) Beck depression inventory, which was tested for its reliability using cronbach's alpha coefficient and was 0.85. Obtained data were analyzed by descriptive sttistics. The results of this study revealed the prevalence of depression among the youth in the observation and protection center surat thani province was 82.97 percents. Within the depression group, 8.79 percents was at severe level, 26.37 percents was at moderate severe level, 15.39 percents was at mild moderate level, and 32.42 percents was at mild level. The results of this study suffested that youths in the observation and protection center had mental health problem especially depression. Psychiatric professional team, therefore, should provide help for the youths so as to prevent severe mental health problem and to enhance their mental health.
