รายละเอียด / Details:

Various research results indicated that parenting styles play an important on psychosocial adjustment, coping strategies and problem behavior including substance abuse of children and youths. This study investigated the relationships between Baum rind's parenting styles : authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, ands neglectful parenting styles and self-directed behaviors : family functioning, emotional intelligence, and coping styles in a sample of 1,316 students in Mathayomsuksa 1 (grade 7) and 6 (grade 12) from five different regions of Thailand. Parenting styles were determined using a Parenting style Rating Scale, and student self-directed behaviors were assessed using a Family Functioning Scale, an Emotional Intelligence Scale and a Coping Scale. The data were analyzed by a two -way ANOVA with a post hoc multiple comparison procedure, the Shaffer test. Two-way ANOVA yielded significant effects for parenting-styles, gender, birth, order, family type, residential regions and academic achievement on students' self-directed behaviors. In particular, 1. Students from authoritative families reported more family functioning and using more problem-focused coping and using less avoidance coping than those brought up with the other three patenting styles, and using more social support seeking and showed higher level of emotional intelligence than those from the authoritarian and the neglectful families. 2. Female students used more social support seeking than male students. The eldest and the youngest child reported more family functioning than the only child. Students in intact families reported more family functioning than those in the other family types. Students living in Bangkok used more avoidance coping than those living in the Southern, the Northeastern, and the Central regions. Students with higher academic achievement reported more family functioning and using less avoidance coping than those with lower academic achievement. The results indicated the important role of parental rearing practices on the development of the self-directed behaviors of their children. Students from authoritative families had more desirable behaviors. They reported more family functioning, had higher level of emotional intelligence, and using more productive coping styles.
