Suicide is devastating and the management of suicide risk in mental health consumers is complex. Whilst risk management of suicide can be compared to cyclone forecasting (Cantor 1996), a number of effective mechanisms can be put in place to minimize risk. The objective of this presentation is to focus on how community mental health crisis teams manage consumer risk by comprehensive assessment, identifying the risk and protective factors of consumers and through the implementation of crisis intervention measures. The information in this presentation has been taken from the research complied on mental health clinician risk management options, utilizing data from Ride Community Mental Health Services in Sydney, Australia of people who either presented to, or were to the management of suicide risk.
