Background and significant of the study : Increasing mental health care competency for the providers in the jails is on of the important tactics of the inmate' mental health development. Training curriculum should be evaluated and improved before further implementation. Objectives : the aims of the study were to valuate the process and the outcome of the training project. Method : the evaluation was conducted in the process of training pilot project held on in 2001. The main trainee group was forty-four authorities of the jails in the central part of Thailand. The minor trainee groups were the fifty male -inmate-volunteers in the Klongprem Central jail and the fifty female inmate volunteers in the Central Female jail. The learning evaluation, in terms of knowledge, attitude and practice, was evaluated by using the pre-test and post-test questions, observing and group discussion. The reaction evaluation was analyzed from the set of the questionnaires and the contents of the focus group discussion. The performance reported from the trainees and their supra-ordinates were used for the outcome evaluation. Frequency and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test and content analysis were employed. Results : The Knowledge score of the major target group after training was statistically increased. Most of the trainees had awareness in mental health problems and viewed that mental health care can improve the quality of life of the inmates. They had moderate mental health care skills in the training class. They actively volunteered to provide psychological support for the sufferers. Recommendation : The training course should be longer. The project should be implemented for all of the authorities who worked directly with the inmates in order to screen the problems and provide basic mental support.
