During the year 1985-1987, a hill tribe opium-addict treatment program was carried out in the villages of Mae-Chan district, Chieng-Rai province. By primary health care strategy the communities had to participate in every steps. The addicts were detoxified and rehabilitated for 2 weeks as the in-patient in the temporary mobile-hospital located near the villages. Using tincture of opium as sedative combined with vitamins and tranquilizers. The successful rate 232 patient was about 87.5 percent. No serious complication was record. The Long-term follow up was unsatisfied. Economic and social development of the community associated with strong enforcement to the supplier may have an important role in re-addict prevention. This program was concluded as the appropriate strategy to hill tribe opium-addict treatment but need further development of the re-addict preventive measure.
