A retrospective study was carried out to identify etiological factors of mentally-retarded children visited the Out Patients Department of Rajanukul Hospital during the years 1985-1987. There were 2, 136 new cases of mentally-retarded children who visited the hospital; 50% were of pre-school age 0-6 years, 42.9% in school age 7-14 years and the sex ratio of males: females were 3:2. The results of this study revealed that more than 50% of the etiologies of mental retardation were biological factors which could be prevented e.g.. Maternal in toxication, neonatal asphyxia, meningitis and prolonged convulsion. Genetic factors contributed only 20.2% the majority of which was Down syndrome 70%. The rest 21.0% were untraceable causes.
