A one year study of 385 drug dependent patients treated at Rajavithi Hospital was conducted from May 3, 1984 to April 30, 1985. Most were in the age group 21-30 years and 93 percent were male. Heroin and opium were being used in 339 (88.05%) of the cases as mainline drug. It was found that most of the cases were single educated in grade 8-10 level and most had permanent job. The majority of the cases started on drug at young age out of curiosity, or for pleasure. The average expenditure on drug was 50-100 Bath per day. About twenty two percent of cases convicted previously for usage of drugs and -or drug trafficking. The outcome of the treatment in these patients was not so effective because lacking of personnel and patients co-operation.
