Insomnia is a common subjective complaint in the elderly. Several major causes exist, and many strategies can be used in management. When drugs are indicated, the benzodiazepines especially the short acting ones are the drugs of choice, Treatment of underlying psychiatric disorders can alleviate the symptom of insomnia with out prescribing sedative-hypnotics.
