Twenty patients with infantile spasms attending the Department of pediatric Neurology, Prasat Neurological Hospital during January 1983 to February 1990 were studied. The frequency of this syndrome was 8 percent 1,000 new pediatric patients 22 percent 1,000 new epileptic patients. Fifty-five percent of the patients lived in Bangkok. The age incidence was 4 months 4 1/2 years. Most of the patients 65 percent were under 1 year-old. Male: female = 1.5:1. The most characteristic type of the seizure was flexor type which characterized by a sudden general and symmetrical contraction of muscle of the neck trunk and extremities. At onset of the syndrome, only single momentary head nod or jerks of the limbs may easily be missed by inexperienced parents or doctors. Eighty percent of the patients had psychomotor retardation. Ninety five percent of the patients were improved after treatment. One patient died from septicemia.
