An analytic study of risk factors of human immunodeficiency virus HIV infection was conducted at pranungklao Hospital in 57 intravenous drug abuse patients. HIV was found in 24 patients. The majority of patients were male, Buddhist and had mean age about 30 years old. Risk groups of HIV infection were patients from Amphoe Pakret, patients who shared needles and instruments with more than 100 persons and patients who used to prisoners. History of needles and instruments sharing with western foreigners, having sexual contact and homosexual were not risk factors.
