This is a retrospective study of 1,201 addicts in Loei Province operated by Department of Social Medicine Loei Hospital since 1983-1988. The study revealed two scenes of addict problem. There were 478 Thai addicts. About two thirds of them were opium addicts. Eighty percent administered by intravenous route. The most common age groups were above 50 years old and between 26-30 years old. The causes of addiction were psychological and socio-economic problems. There were 723 among refugees from Loas. All were opium addicts. Ninety-five percent administered by smoking route. The most common age group was between 26- years old. About three quarters of them used salicylate analgesics with opium. Physical illness was the most frequent cause of their addiction.
