Engagins "Seeking Safe Passage" SSP is essential for enhancing the health of pregnant and her fetus. The aim of this comparative descriptive study was to investigate SSP in pregnant with and without HIV. Rubin's concept of maternal tasks of pregnancy was used to guide this study. Convenience sampling was used to obtain a sample consisting of 114 pregnant women with HIV seropositivity and 116 pregnant women with HIV seronegativity. Face-to-face interviews took place at the antenatal care clinics. The Hart Prenatal Care Actions Scale (HPCA) was used and its internal consistency was .80. The results showed that the pregnant women with HIV reported significantly lower SSP scores than pregnant women without HIV. In addition, pregnant women with HIV were more likely to have junk food, coffee, carbonated drink, drink alcohol and smoke but less likely to have social interaction with others comparing with pregnant women without HIV. SSP was significantly correlated with education, income, financial difficulty, cohabitation and pregnancy wantedness. Scheff's tests showed that the means on SSP were significantly different by levels of education and income. The study findings suggest that pregnant womwn living with HIV may not benefit from available resources provided at the antenatal care clinics. Nurses should assess the pregnant women with HIV's personal characteristics along with maternal tasks, then, design services to fit their needs. Future research should focus on measuring factors of meternal tasks (e.g., acceptance of the child by others, binding-in to the child, and giving of oneself), which may influence SSp by a reliable and valid tool.
