This study addresses the process of developing an instrument for measuring the burden caregivers experience in caring for psychiatric patients. The Psychiatric Patients’ Caregiver Burden Scale (PPCBS) was developed based on Orem’s General theory of Nursing and the findings from a literature review and in-depth interviews with caregivers. Eighteen items were obtained. Five hundred and sixty-six psychiatric caregivers from three hospitals in central Thailand who were experienced in caring for a psychiatric patient for at least one year were included in the study. Standard psychometric procedures were employed to test for reliability and validity. The developed instrument has both content and construct validity, the CVI was 1 and the item’s factor loadings were all above 0.30. It contains four subscales:Daily Activity, Therapeutic ACTIVITY, Health Service Activity, and Deputing Activity. The PPCBS’s internal consistency was also satisfied, with a Chronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.92. The PPCBS can be used to assess psychiatric caregiving situation and provide a valid instrument for studying psychiatric patients’ caregivers and other caregivers with a similar caregiving situation. It is also useful for designing intervention to relieve a caregiver’s burden.
