รายละเอียด / Details:

People with long-term HIV infection are individuals who have lived with HIV longer than usual. It is still unknown how these groups of Thai people cope with their experience of HIV/AIDS. This study aimed to explore how long-term HIV-infected Thai people cope with the problems or events related to the infection. The qualitative research method of grounded theory was used. The participants consiste of 20 Thai people who had been infected with HIV for ten or more years. In-depth interviews were the main method of data collection. Constant comparison and a coding process were the basic analysis methods. The study findings illustrated the process of struggling to live normally among long-term HIV-infected Thai people. The struggling process consists of four consecutive stages-Flight. Pulling oneself together to fight, Struggling for existence, and Living normally. In the flight stage, the participants avoided facing or ran away from the situations related to the infection. The second stage, pulling oneself together to fight, was a period in which the participants turned themselves from flight to a ready state to fight for living. The third stage, struggling for existence, was a stage in which the participants worked very hard to overcome many events or difficulties in order to continue their lives and their purposes in living. Finally, living normally was a state in which they perceived themselves and went on with lives as normal persons living in the society. The findings also reveal that the perception of HIV/AIDS among these people continuously changed from a negative to a positive view. This substantive theory can be used to develop an intervention program to the HIV-infected people to cope effectively with HIV infection.
