Alcohol consumption is part of societal activities since the ancient time. In general people believe that alcohol has some benefit for them. Some of the recent research evidences also point out the healthy benefit of alcohol consumption. There are substantial evidences on the negative impact and complication from alcohol use. Alcoholism is a common health problem in Thailand. The symposium will focus on: 1) the nature and progression of alcohol consumption, 2) biological, psychological as well as social and cultural factors influence development of alcoholism, 3) impacts of alcohol use on psychological, familial, and social aspects, and 4) current evidences on benefit of treatment of alcoholism.
