The aim of this ethnographic study was to explore the meaning of death for persons with AIDS and for their family members in rural Northeastern Thailand (Esan). Participants included five individuals diagnosed with terminal-stage AIDS and twelve family care providers. All of the participants were from five villages in Nongrua District, Khon Kaen, Thailand. Analysis focused on thick description and constant comparative analysis to identify themes. The meaning of death fit into three traditional Thai themes. The first theme was "mod bun mod Karma," which means that fate or Karma comes to an end. The second theme was "lood pon," which means feeling free from all kinds of suffering.The third theme was "dub soon," which means the stage of non-existence. Data from the participants also helped in identifying major components in the process of death. These components included th perception of death; attitude toward death; experiences of death and loss; and the socio-cultural context death. This last component involved beliefs in buddhism,kinship norms that specified roles of family members, and the social network of the community. The results of this research emphasize the importance of understanding the perceptions of patients and their families regarding death. Such understanding is essential to planning cultural competence, effective-nursing interventions. Only with a deep, contextual-based understanding of the meaning of death for all of those individuals to meet this final challenge of living with a sense of purpose, fulfillmment and dignity.
