Galya Rajanagarindra Institute had developd the training pilot project in mental health care for the inmates in 2001. The main trainee geoup was forty-four authorities of the jails in the central paart of Thailand. The minor trainee group was the fifty male-inmate-volunteers in the Klongprem Central jail and the fifty female inmate volunteers in the Central Female Jail. The aims of the study were to evaluate the process and the outcome of the training project. The result of the study would be beneficial for further implementation. The learning evaluation, in terms of knowledge, attitude and practice, was assessed by using the pre-test and post-test questionnaires, observing and group discussion. The reaction evaluation was analyzed from the set of the questionnaires and the contents of the focus group discussion. The performance report from the trainees and their supra-ordinates were used for the outcome evaluation. The knowledge score of the main group after training, analyzed by the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, was statistically increased. Most of the trainees had awareness in mental health problems and viewed the mental health care can improve the quality of life in the inmates. They volunteered to provide psychological support for the suffer. In their opinions, the training course should be longer. The project should be implemented for all of the authorities who worked directly with the inmates. The sufficient numbers of volunteers should be trained in order to screen the problems and provide basic mental support.
