Methodological cancers including the use of confounded measures, life experiences or the self-selection fo events,and biased reporting of events are challenges within the stress paradigm. Strategies to minimize these methodological weaknesses are: 1) selecting stress measures which are not confounded with outcome; 2) dropping items from a scale that potentially are confounded with the outcomes; 3) using objective measures of stressors when dealing with subjective appraisal; and 4) using triangulation methods rather than self-report of events to verify findings. It is necessary to understand that the use of different methodological approaches may yield different research findings. Therefore, researchers should declare the methodological limitations and strengths of the stress paradigm in respective research findings. Additionally, researchers should address specific solutions to methodological challenges when noting future directions for research.
