lithium carbonate is effective in preventing or diminishing the intensity of recurrences of bipolar affective illness. In this report four patients with frequent recurrences of mania and depression were treated with lithium carbonate and followed-up for a period of two to three years. The result was satisfactory. All patients who received maintenance therapy either became free of apparent recurrences or had recurrences of such reduced intensity that they could be treated successfully on an outpatient basis with neuroleptics, antidepressants, and/or temporary increases in lithium dosage. Be fore administering lithium the physician must make certain that both the cardiovascular and renal systems are functioning adequately. It is recommended that in the cases of recurrent bipolar affective illness which are not easily or effectively helped by psychotropic drugs or electro convulsive treatment lithium carbonate should be given.
