Epidemic Hysteria in a school for twelve Thai girls of Buddhist faith was described. The school is located nearly 350 kilometers from Bangkok in Petchaboon province. The authors conducted interviews and group interviews with persons involved, including the students, teachers, parents, the head teacher, and members of the Chon Pri community. The native interpretation of the outbreak was the school girls were due to possession by offended spirits called “Nang Takien” (Wood spirits). However the reason of the offensive was not clear. Knowledge of the psychodynamic and social factors involved in these cases. The authors put emphasis on the psychopathology of the head teacher and his staffs. Few factors contributing to this episode included personalities of the students, teachers and traditional healers.
