In this article the authors reported preliminary findings from an house-to house survey done in a Southern Thai village. Basing on data from the Present State examination done by a psychologist, the senior author (B.W.) found that one third of the village population have either depressive neurosis or anxiety neurosis. About one third of the above sample were seen independently by another psychiatrist (W.T.) and the PSE diagnoses were clinically confirmed in almost 90% of cases. The successfulness and limitation of PSE in epidemiological survey and probable causes for the high point prevalence rates of neuroses were discussed.
