The percentage of HIV-1 subtype B and subtype E was studied in 479 HIV-1 infected injecting drug users IDU attending Thanyarak Hospital during August 1996 to December 1996. A peptide bibding enzymeimmunoassay PEIA was applied for surveillance of subtype distribution since the technique was suitable for analysis a large number of chinical specimens. Of those 375 PEIA positive cases, 111 29.6% were subtype B while the other 264 70.4% ones were subtype E. The injecting behaviors were defined by positive urinary test for opiaties which were numerated to be 90.4% 433 of 479. Subtype E infected IDUs were younger with a mean age of 27 while those of subtype B infected IDUs were 33 years t-test, p‹0.05. Comparison between observed years and % subtype E % IDU, % IDU was increasing and predominating in 1999 r=0.998, p<0.05. Such correlation indicted that subtype E will account for 95% subtype in infected IDU during 1998-1999. These data suggested that HIV-1 subtype E maybe the major subtype in infected IDU in Thailand by the near future.
